The old oak / De oude eik

This oak is about 800 years old and has a hole in it so big a person can stand inside.

I felt the earth ~ move ~ under my feet

6.20 this morning we had a rare, blogworthy event here: a real earth quake!
I woke up to a shaking bed, and immediately realised it was not a nightmare nor a happy dream. The whole house was shaking and rattling. Apparantly for 5 full seconds with a strength of 4.8 on the Richter scale. Baby slept through it all like a well trained good baby. But I woke up, and had some time for a coffee before it was time to wake the baby and bring her to Mother for the first feed.
No damage nor injuries. Just some drawers had opened themselves in the kitchen. Wonder what my own little apartment here will look like. Expect no damage there too.

And yes, you read right; Baby needs waking up for her first feed! We just won't talk about the rest of the night.....

Getting ready for Christmas / Klaar voor de Kerst

Here in Denmark they have the wonderful tradition of lighting a candle each Sunday of the advent. Which of course I know as a catholic tradition. I was given an advents wreath a couple of weeks ago, and I enjoy taking the time to light a candle every week. As well as reading in 'Winter's Wisdom' from the Ministry of the Arts, all together a great way to prepare myself for Christmas. Which I am very much looking forward to spending at home this year!

The deer park / Het herten park

Close to where I work now there is a huge deer park. The other day I went there for a walk, and never in my life have I seen so many deer together. It was truly magical.

All is well / Alles gaat goed

All is well here in Copenhagen. Just have a shakey internet connection so I won't be spending much time trying to post.

Alles gaat goed hier in Kopenhagen.

News flash / Laatste nieuws

Yesterday I arrived back in Amsterdam. No sooner had I switched my phone back on as I left the plane or it rang; how would I feel about a job in Denmark? Leaving sort of .... now?
Sure, I would love to have an other job before Christmas which I plan to enjoy at home this year and than have some nice Texan winter sun before I go back to work in Brussels in January.
So I talked to the new-mum-to-be, arranged that starting 'now' is not 'right now' but very soon none the less, decided to completely forget about how cold and dark Copenhagen is this time of year and get excited about an other adventure!
There is a mountain of letters to be answered here, bills to be paid and mooched books to mail out. As well as a ton of laundry to be done and I really need to figure out what my warmest clothes are to wear the next month.
Or maybe I need to buy some yarn to finally knit myself a chevron scarf? And I want a skull beanie too!

Pubs

One of the many things I love about this country is how the pubs all look so special. These are just two that are around here that I saw on my daily walks.

On the needles in London / Op de naalden in Londen

Of course I am still knitting away.......so far I finished the back of a cardigan, and a mini version of the Chevron scarf.

My daily walk / Mijn dagelijkse wandeling

It may often be dreary and grey weather this time of year, but unless it is really raining I try to go out for a walk every day. Usually I walk along the south bank of the river, under the Tower Bridge, towards London Bridge, cross there, back along the north bank, around the Tower of London, and back over the Tower Bridge again.
Lovely walk!!!

All Souls / Allerzielen

This year I want to remember these people who passed over.

Samen zeehondjes gekeken in Pieterburen.

Karl Chamberlain. Once Texas started executing people again earlier this year, KC was one of the first to go. I did not really know him of course, you are not allowed to talk to any one else than the one you are visiting. But I sat next to him and his visitor once, and I was struck by this big guys huge smile. He was a friend of Bobby's and I got to know him through stories from Bobby as well as the lady visiting him. His execution touched me more than others, as he was the first man I had come to know as a person, a human being, seen his smile, and than know he had just been killed. It was hard for me to wrap my head around. It still is in a way.
I dreamt about KC a couple of weeks ago. He was running along a beach, and than threw (his finally uncuffed!) hands up in the air and shouted "I'm free!!!".
When I described that dream to Bobby, and especially how KC was running, Bobby told me that that was exactly how KC used to run.
Run freely now KC!

Gregory Wright. An other man I do not really know, other than that I saw him a few times while visiting. Last time only a few weeks ago.
He was killed last Thursday by the state of Texas, despite proof that he did not commit the murder. DNA proof, sworn statements from the man who did, and a polygraph test. They even said that they did not have proof he commited this murder, but still he was in the house when it happened so he had part in it... and Texas was only too eager to carry out their 'tough on crime' regime'.
After the execution his wife took his body home, where yesterday he was burried on the family land.
You are home now Greg!

Allow me my bitternes for a little moment longer: The other suspect in this case has now been taken of death row and is not expected to return. He has cut a deal obviously and Texas seems to rather kill the wrong man, than admit a mistake.

And pray with me that I manage to bend bitternes into a more constructive route.

Christmas cake

A week ago I baked this years Christmas cake. That probably sounds like I do one every year, but to be honest I think it has been over 10 years ago since I baked the last one. As I decided to spend Christmas at home this year though I really liked the idea of starting the preparations.
So I went shopping, and note a key ingredient; the bottle of brandy in the back!

And for those who do not know what Christmas cake is, it basically is a very rich fruit cake.

With the help of St Delia I made the batter.

And this is what it looked like after many hours of slow baking in the oven.

And this is what it looks like now: safely wrapped up in layers of baking paper, foil and plastic. And....what you don't see is that it regularly gets taken out, to have holes pricked in and be fed some brandy. This should be done every week or so, but as work keeps me away a bit longer at a time I just do it when I can. It smelled yummie when I last fed it, and I think it will taste just as good come Christmas day.
Want to come eat some with me??

London

Leaving for London today. And will be staying pretty close to where I took this photo a month or so ago. Just hope the weather will be a bit brighter. I might even finally make a flight in the London Eye in that case.

That which was meant for me / Dat wat wel voor mij bedoeld was

These were the things that were meant for me that I took back from my visits to Texas. I was surprised by the shampoo, a kind and also funny gesture. I now smell of TDCJ Pineapple. And you know what? It really is not that bad!
The other thing given to me was a pile of farewell letters. Both last letters from men executed by now, as well as letters sent to Bob before he got a stay of execution a few years ago. It is good he no longer has them in his cell. But he also knows that I won't just 'loose' them and I may do something worthwhile with it one day.

Contraband / Verboden Bezit

My trip to Texas had a few unexpected surprises. Where I thought the land would look chaotic, it in fact looked pretty much cleared up already and I just noticed a lot of repair work being done all over the place.
There was no picketing to do, no shout out show at the radio station. So where I thought I may have to help people with 'whatever' I in fact had a lot of time for myself and got to practise driving and I learned how to open a trunk with a screwdriver among other things.
Than again, I did run into a few situations where people just seemed on the edge of a nervous breakdown. They obviously had had a lot to deal with recently.

As I had so much time I managed to do 4 visits while I was there, and after my first visit I was asked whom I had been visiting. I told the lady CO and she said 'I have for some property for you' and she proceded to give me this bag:

When I saw this I could not help but think 'what is up with this, have they given me his dirty laundry now or what???' I took it back to the house and unpacked it, and I started to realise I had been given the contraband they had confiscated when I recognised a few items I had been told that he lost in a shake down a few months ago.

Now I have to explain a few things here. Inmates can give things they own away. They call it releasing property. I have been given things before. In general they give away old books or letters they cannot keep anymore due to lack of space.
Now I knew I would be receiving some property this trip, but I had been told during that visit he had not finished reading through it all and he would have it ready for me to take home after our second visit, 2 days later.

Anyway, about contraband: contraband is anything they are not supposed to have. They get 'shook down' periodically and anything that they are not allowed to have is taken away from them. Now they are of course looking for big things like drugs and weapons, but they also confiscate a lot of what they call 'nuisance contraband'. And that is what that whole collection was what I had been given: his dictionary and bible which were so old they were falling apart if not held together by all the selotape. Those were considered 'altered' and therfor confisgated. His gymshorts in which he'd sewn pockets, so he could take things with him when going to recreate in the dayroom; of course those too were altered property. A home made showerbag so he could hang his stuff around his neck when going to the shower; remember hands are always cuffed behind his back so it is the only way they can take something with them. That too I have together with all the contents of his razor, soap in a soap dish etc. They are just really strange things to have of someone. And there are many more odd things........

Even stranger though is why on earth have they given it to me? He did not mean to release it to me. In fact, once it has been confisgated, he has no control over it so he cannot tell them where to send it to. As far as we know they have always just thrown stuff like this away.
They either changed the rules in that they cannot throw away confisgated contraband any longer. In which case they are giving themselves a lot of work by giving it all to relatives and friends as stuff like this gets taken all the time.
It is more likely though they made a real strange mistake here and that I now have something I really am not supposed to have. A good reason for me to hang on to it for a while.
So here is what the TDCJ considers contraband:

The Living Christ / De Levende Christus

Last Sunday I went to Mass in Livingston, TX. I loved the cross there, a cross with a living Christ. I often wonder why so often we see the crucified, dying Christ as for me the fact that he lived and lives on is much more important.

Off again / Ben weer weg

Lake Livingston is where I will be the next few days. Doubt it will look as peaceful as this, as the area has been hit hard bij hurricane Ike. You'll hear about it next week.

Still knitting / Ik brei nog steeds

When in London I made it to my favourite yarn shop ever; iKnit, and bought some gorgeous sock yarn which I am now knitting into a scarf. You do not need to be a rocket scientist to figure out sock yarn (=thin) and scarf (=needs to be long) means that it will take a minute to knit up. I love it though.
This is what it looks like so far.

Home again / Weer thuis

Just before I left I had noticed that my orchid was budding again.

And this is what I came home to earlier this week.

Which is the reason why I don't have it very often. But I do have it once every stay in the UK.

Hi

Been told off by my brother: "those new glasses are getting old, time to post something new, or at least let us know you are well!"
Right, I'm well, just busy. Baby needs a lot of time to settle as he is collicky and spittely.
And the weather here has been plain awful, which means misserable pictures. It looks like my next day off the weather will be good though so I hope to be making some photos than!
I'll be back with more..........

Of laat tenminste even weten dat alles goed gaat!"

Quick check in / Even vlug bijkletsen

Just a quick check in. All is well, just very busy. Busy household, baby that has not figured out the difference between night and day yet, and lots of family members and friends dropping by. The phone and doorbell ring non stop it seems at times. Lots of gifts arriving too, and this I just had to share with you all; aren't they lovely? Baby clothes rolled into flowers, I think it is a great business idea!

Even snel bijkletsen.

London

While I was leisurly walking around town yesterday with a friend, enjoying a falafel lunch, browsing the flea market I got a text saying that my new charge was on his way. So I went home, and started laundry, booking tickets etc.
By now the baby has arrived safely and mother and child are doing very well.
And I am packing, running some last errands and all that.
Ready to fly out tomorrow!

Still home / Nog steeds thuis

What an unexpected surprise. London baby is still hiding in mummies tummy so apart from meeting up with family and friends I have lots of time for massages and other pampering sessions like a pedicure, yoga classes and ....... more knitting of course!

Tourist in my own home town / Toerist in mijn eigen stad

I visit a lot of beautiful and inspiring places all over the world. But Amsterdam seriously is not bad either!
