FAQ
Now I am back home I get a lot of the same questions all the time.
Was your last job so bad that you were so exhausted?
No, actually it was a perfectly lovely baby with a perfectly lovely family and I really did not miss out on an awful lot of sleep there. It was more that I spent a lot of energy thinking (oh all right; worrying) about how to continue work wise now working abroad brings in so much less money.
Now that I have made that decision I am happy to be working in Amsterdam again and having a great time too! I have already booked myself for several holidays for elderly or disabled people as a volunteer nurse and as you all know I will be going to Texas again. Also I am keeping my eye on the exchange rate for the British Pound and hopefully also will be able to do the odd job abroad.
What is it that you really miss now you are not living in ‘these big houses’ anymore.
Actually, not all houses were ‘these big houses’ at all. But I confess: I miss not having a dishwasher. I used to totally not mind doing the dishes by hand, but now I really got out of the habit of doing them! How odd is that?
What is the best thing about being back home. Sleeping in your own bed?
No, had good beds wherever I was, very cosy bedding too.
The best thing is just being home. Being able to make arrangements with people to pop over and go hang out with them. Having all my knitting projects around me so I can pick up and work at a different thing every night if I want to. Doing my own grocery shopping and cooking. (Which I did in my last job in Denmark too and that was a big plus!)
It is just little things like that.
Do you have any funny stories that you want to share?
Yes, there are a few things that I can tell there. But you’ll have to wait.
I now have to get ready to go out learning to sing ‘smartlappen’ (tearjerker songs) Amsterdam style with a bunch of girls from work. Kinda like country, but different! Same sentiment though…………

Finally / Eindelijk
Finally had my hair cut by a 'real' stylist. I now have layers and my hair looks so much more alive and it is so much lighter. For the first time in years I am truly happy with a hair cut!
More happy news is that I have this pair of boots that I had not worn since breaking my ankle as they simply did not fit anymore. Today I just slipped into them again.
Eindelijk heb ik mijn haar laten knippen door een 'echte' haar stylist. Ik heb nu laagjes en mijn haar ziet er veel levendiger uit en het is zo veel lichter. Voor het eerst in jaren ben ik echt heel blij met mijn kappersbeurt!
Nog meer blij nieuws is dat ik een paar laarzen heb die ik sinds het breken van mijn enkel niet meer heb gedragen omdat ze gewoon niet meer pastten. Vandaag gleed ik er gewoon weer in.

Home / Thuis
I am home and all is good. Was exhausted at first and more or less all I did was sleep, knit and talk for hours on the phone catching up with people.
Getting my energy back now and am very busy organising all sorts of fun and practical things for life here again.
Cleaning out the fridge for it to be taken away when they come bring my new one. Changing phone providers, checking up insurances and well, making a lot of phone calls really.
Most of all my house really needs a thourough clean and sort through as I have not really lived here for so long. I was here for a few months a year ago of course, but with a broken leg there is only little you can do.
Anyway, I'll be happily puttering around here for a while!
As for the knitting, that wool I fell in love with just had to be knitted up into something special of course: a comfort shawl for my friend Danielle who was recently widowed and whom I'll be visiting next weekend.
Ik ben thuis en alles gaat goed. Ik was erg moe en heb eerst alleen maar geslapen, gebreid en uren aan de telefoon gehangen om met iedereen bij te kletsen.
Mijn energie komt nu weer terug en ben druk allerlei praktische en gezellige zaken te regelen voor mijn leven hier.
Heb mijn koelkast schoongemaakt zodat hij opgehaald kan worden om plek te maken voor de nieuwe. Nieuwe telefoon provider geregeld, verzekeringen gecheckt, in het kort heel veel telefoontjes gepleegd.
Mijn huis heeft voornamelijk een goede schoonmaak en opruimronde nodig nu ik er zo lang niet echt gewoond heb. En toen ik hier enige tijd was vorig jaar kon ik natuurlijk niet veel doen met mijn gebroken pootje.
Maar nu geniet ik echt van het 'ronddarren' in huis.
En mijn gebrei, de wol waar ik verliefd op werd vorige week moest natuurlijk wel iets heel bijzonders worden: een 'comfort shawl' voor Danielle die onlangs weduwe is geworden en bij wie ik volgend weekend op bezoek ga.

Getting ready to go home
Today truly is my very last day of working abroad for a while. And the past couple of days I have spent getting ready for that. Nope, it is not taking me days to pack my tiny little suitcase. So far I have talked to the agency back home to schedule days I will work, (including a few nightshifts of doing home births, very excited about doing those again), scheduled uniform fittings and a meeting with the lady who will be my team leader ánd already started to work on my list of questions for her! I found a local yoga class that I finally can sign up for to go to weekly and I have already signed up for some volunteer and social activities. Well, volunteer work is being social of course.
And even though I am not yet home, I have started to buy new things for it! First of all a much needed new refrigerator. Just before I left to go work abroad a few years ago my old fridge broke down. As I did not know how much I would be away etc, but still needed one, a friend gave me an old one. And it was ancient. And noisy. And probably used up a large amount of electricity too so it was a good thing I kept it unplugged unless I was home. But now that I plan to live at home again I really need a better one and I spent the past few days surfing the net and found a good deal and ordered it.
An other thing that has been irking me a bit about my house is my linen cupboard. I sorted through it a while back, and already got rid of some things in there that I just never use or I simply don’t like using anymore. There is still a whole pile of towels to sort through. I have many, and none of them are any longer nice. Most I inherited from my mother, who passed away 10 years or so ago. I decided to get a whole bunch of new ones, partially paid for with the huge amount of bonus points I accumulated on my savings account.
And I have many plans for things to do.
I guess you can tell, I am ready to go home!
